Welcome to the International Perthes Study Group
dedicated to research, education, and awareness of Perthes disease.
Who We Are
The International Perthes Study Group is a group of specialists and researchers with a common goal of advancing knowledge and care of patients with Perthes disease. The IPSG unites specialists worldwide to gather and discuss varied experiences and opinions. As of 2017 there are IPSG members in more than 10 countries.
What is Perthes Disease
Perthes disease is a rare disease involving the loss of blood flow to the femoral head, or the ball of the hip joint. This disease affects children and can cause pain and deformation of the hip joint. Early intervention and specialized care from a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon can have a large impact on the outcome.
Our Research
The International Perthes Study Group seeks to answer questions to help better understand and treat Perthes disease. We accomplish this by bringing many specialists and researchers together to collect and evaluate data. We also strive to engage patients, parents, and caregivers to ensure the research is relevant and evidence based.
Current Studies Now Enrolling
Our studies are organized based on the age at onset of Perthes as the treatment options and the question on how to best treat patients vary depending on the age at onset of the disease.
Survey of adult patients > 18 years with Perthes disease
6 to 8 age group comparing non-surgical and surgical treatments
8 to 11 age group assessing the role of non-weight bearing after hip surgery
Over 11 age group comparing 3 surgical treatments
Prognostic value of advanced MRI called perfusion MRI on predicting outcome
