About IPSG

About the IPSG

Why was IPSG formed?

Our group was started in March of 2012 by pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and researchers from all over US and other countries who felt the need to improve the care of patients with Perthes disease. We recognized that while Perthes disease has been known for over 100 years, many important questions about the disease remain unanswered.

What is unique about the IPSG?

The views represented by IPSG are not based on one surgeon’s or one institution’s views about Perthes. Our views are based on over 40 pediatric orthopaedic surgeons coming together to openly discuss and form consensus about what medical information is evidence-based and what is not regarding Perthes. We aim to identify the areas of uncertainty about the disease and to address these questions through a collaborative research program.

Our mission

The mission of the IPSG is to advance knowledge of Perthes disease and to disseminate objective, evidence-based information to the patients and their families and to the medical community. When dealing with a disease as rare as Perthes, it is important to have consortium to share and vet knowledge as well as validate procedures and outcomes. Through education and research, our aim is to change the way we treat Perthes disease in a positive manner.

Education and Advocacy

Medical Education

The IPSG supports the continuing education of medical professionals, believing that advancement through education is crucial to improved patient outcomes. The IPSG has had the honor of presenting at conferences hosted by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the European Pediatric Orthopaedic Society.

Parent Resources

Perthes disease is a variable disease with equally specific and varied treatments. From stage 1 to stage 4, this can be overwhelming. The IPSG believes better outcomes are reached through honest expectations of the disease process and treatments. You’ll find resources here to help you understand the disease and its impact.
